Can You Make it a Pencil? That’s the question put by D&AD to creatives everywhere as a way to encourage them to participate in D&AD’s annual awards show.
“We wanted to communicate to the creative community that all the drive, passion and determination it took to create these pieces is similar to what it takes to win a coveted D&AD Pencil. It is all about amazing ideas that are flawlessly executed,” says Dave Watson, Creative Director, TAXI Canada.
The first video, set in New York, features the work of renowned fiber artist Robyn Love, who was commissioned by TAXI and D&AD to create a crocheted pencil cozy that covered a 10,000 gallon water tank. The piece, which took Love and a team of crocheters three weeks to knit, weighed 300 lbs and required 32 miles of yarn.
The second video, which takes place in London's Trafalgar Square, features the work of UK-based Japanese artist Miwa Takabayashi. Miwa was commissioned by TAXI and D&AD to erect a large cardboard pencil. "We set out to make our own Pencil in one of London's world-renowned landmarks," said Shona Kelly, Awards Marketing Manager at D&AD. "Packaging specialists and an army of D&AD volunteers battled against the constant drizzle to bring a burst of yellow sunshine to Trafalgar Square."
