 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   WORLDWIDE    April 22, 2014 20:08 (Edited: February 17, 2023 05:19)
BEST TV
Winner: Cardstore: The World's Toughest Job. Numerous people (both in and out of the business) forwarded this to me last week and posted it to social media, which I think is indicative of the effect it had on popular culture. It's a really good idea, and a very poignant way to bring the difficulty and value of the job that mothers do to life. It's also a sweet and touching way to bring attention to the Mother's Day holiday.

Runner Up: Toronto Jewish Film Festival: Cowboy. It was tough to choose a second favorite among this week's contenders, as they all had merit. I chose "Cowboy" because after stepping away from the work for a bit, I found that this piece stayed with me, and was ultimately more memorable than the others. I think juxtaposing a traditional western film trope with the celebration of Shabbos is an unexpected and fun way to draw people in and gain attention for the Toronto Jewish Film Festival.

BEST PRINT
Winner: Volkswagen: Lane Assist. I like a good bit of the VW work from around the world. It tends to be simple, clear and clever, and this piece is all of those things. Both the casting and the visual metaphor, captured my attention and do a nice job of illustrating the value of a technology designed to keep a driver out of harm's way.

Runner Up: ADOT: Words 1. I like the simplicity of this ad, and the timeliness-and timelessness-of the message. It provokes thought, it's an important message, and it's an easy get, which is how I like print to work.

BEST OUTDOOR
Winner: Gatorade Billboard Refrigerator. I am a big fan of utility in brand activation to deliver visceral and meaningful brand experiences. In this case, the execution provides both utility and product demonstration to the players, and a larger awareness role with the fans. It's clever, it's useful, and it provides a lot of bang for the investment. Nicely done.

Runner Up: Smart Cars: Smart Side. This is a clever use of the space and context to deliver a fundamental truth about the Smart car. Cities are crowded, space is at a premium, and the Smart was designed as a solution to that problem. This ad is a really nice marriage of media and message.

BEST INTERACTIVE
Winner: The Akanksha Foundation: Message Barter. I love this idea. It's a novel approach and very sweet. I think the concept of using the power of the web to spread a message broadly but with the intention of gaining a response from a single person is brilliant. And the fact that it was done to help provide free education to underprivileged children is just wonderful. Bravo.

Runner Up: The Other Half: The Other Half. There were several nice pieces in this bunch, so choosing a runner up was difficult. I was swayed by the strength of the execution of this concept (the half cross of the Swiss flag as an emblem of "the other half"), and the nobility of the effort: essentially marrying the power of the web with the creativity of the citizenry to give voice to a genuine and heartfelt expression of goodwill.
