 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   WORLDWIDE    September 09, 2014 00:08 (Edited: February 17, 2023 05:19)
I just got off the train from Paris, all fuelled up on madeleines, coffee and cigarettes and into the London office, straight into the Best Ads judging.

BEST TV
The winner is without a doubt The Times. Despite my severe attention deficit it managed to keep my watching for over six minutes. It's an amazing story about brave people reporting from hostile environments and the Times heritage in war journalism. You couldn't make it up.

The runner up is Guinness Africa. It's a bold and ballsy move from Guinness in every way and probably very contentious too. Like most good ads should be.

BEST PRINT
There's lots of clever visual trickery this week. But I'm a sucker for a copy ad with simple art direction. Speight's is no exception. I never tasted the beer but I definitely would if I could get it on tap at my local.

BEST OUTDOOR
The winner is KLM - a great and simple way to show how KLM connects cities and people. I love it when outdoor goes interactive. And it makes you smile. This ticks all the boxes.

The runner up: The storm - ok, so using augmented reality in outdoor has been done before. But this piece is worth a mention purely on great craft.

BEST INTERACTIVE
I always think I will go to hell when I don't award or at least mention charity work in this kind of circumstances. Fortunately, the GRAPE Ukraine app is also clever way to give first aid advice and instructions to people in a war torn part of the world.

But the winner is Under Amour by Droga5. It's a brilliant campaign in a world full of social trolls. I never realized Gisele was such an athlete - watching her beat the crap out of a sandbag makes a strong statement. I wouldn't like to get the wrong side of her.

This week's guest judge is Bo Hellberg, executive creative director at HeyHuman and Brave, London.

Bo grew up in rural Sweden, a hearty, toughening experience. Along with many vigorous physical activities (shooting fluffy animals and arm wrestling flaxen-haired Helgas), Bo discovered a love of literature and a flair for wordsmithery and decided to build a career in advertising.

He worked at Swedish above-the-line agencies like Lowe until he realised that his glacial Scandinavian demeanour could be put to better use abroad. He hotfooted it to Australia and Peter Clemenger/BBDO, then in the interest of racking up some air miles, the UK.

Enchanted by the warmth and politeness of London's commuters, he decided to stay. Bo adapted to the intricacies of technology and found himself riding on the .com bandwagon, giving agencies such as Modem Media the benefit of his infinite wisdom. After the .com crash, Bo joined Ogilvy as Creative Director and soon was made board member of Ogilvy Group UK. Being a restless soul, he set sail again and arrived in Paris and DDB.

But the siren call of warm beer and poor cuisine was impossible to resist and Bo returned to London's bosom at the end of 2013 to take up the reins at HeyHuman and Brave.

Over the years, countries and agencies, Bo has picked up accolades at D&AD, Cannes Lions, LIAA, DMA, BIMA and the Lovie Awards and he is a regular on the speaking and judging circuit.
