one of 5 short films entitled "This Is Living" (Warning: it's a few minutes long)

Creative Commentary
------------------------------------
To push the anticipation surrounding the release of Sony’s Playstation 3, the gaming pioneer has commissioned a series of five ‘films’, each one focusing on real life characters in real life situations to demonstrate the need for, or benefit of, the platform’s new technology. Bridging the gaps between commercials, virals, documentaries and short films, the ‘spots’ will initially be launched in sequence through the PSP3 website, with future releases being mooted for Europe’s HD cinemas. Final Cut London editor, James Rosen, cut the mould-breaking campaign in a style as far removed from traditional commercials as possible.

Shot using a hi-speed HD camera, the first film to be released is ‘Real Time’, using a pair of amateur boxers who demonstrate the importance of impulsive reactions as an analogy for PSP3’s real-time physics. The other four films feature speed stacking as a means of showcasing processing power; a London man who obsessively collects miscellany to highlight immense storage potential; BMX flatland biking as a demonstration of precision controls and wireless capabilities; and the final film blows up an old lady’s home to flaunt the PSP3’s high-definition image quality.

We haven't even sent out the emails saying the site is updated & already there's a look-alike

This just in from Extrême/Springer & Jacoby France. Naturally we're not suggesting anything except that it's a good idea & not surprising that it's popped up in a couple of different parts of the world.

But we'd like to put S&J's version on the record as well.

JUNE 1ST - 4TH APOLLO WEST END

BIRDS EYE VIEW FILM FESTIVAL 2006
JUNE 1ST - 4TH APOLLO WEST END

Film is the most powerful medium in the world, but only 7% of directors are women. In the luxury of the Apollo West End, Birds Eye View brings you a feast of outstanding short and feature films from women across the globe.

3 stunning programmes of short films – a showcase of the most outstanding new talent from around the globe: drama, animation, comedy,

3 feature premieres – Kiss Me Not On The Eyes (Dunia): a visually stunning and highly sensual exploration of Arab culture; Going Private (Nachbeben): the fall from grace of a Swiss banker, as a barbeque with colleagues and wives disintegrates into blackmail, infidelity and intrigue; Beau Brummell (A Charming Man): homoeroticism and sycophantism abound in this fascinating tale of the original Dandy, starring James Purefoy.

PLUS: Live comedy and film. Masterclass with Martha Fiennes. Bring a Baby & kids screenings. Women cinematographers & commercials directors. Crazy kitsch 90s erotica (!). All critiqued and discussed at Birds Eye Review with journo-broadcasters Miranda Sawyer, Natasha Walter and Bonnie Greer.

Creative mafia?

Award shows are always controversial, and this year's round of Australian award shows didn't disappoint. Is there work that should have won, but didn't? Why didn't the work that won locally do nearly so well internationally? Is there a "creative mafia" controlling who wins what?

"The same bunch of people are winning. It's a big, self-serving club, but it's big enough that people can actually benefit from it so that it can support itself and self-propagate. Admission to that club is very difficult. I'd hate to be a creative that was part of an agency that was not well thought of, that was doing good work," says one observer at a Sydney production company, questioning why the winners of local awards were very different to those awarded by international judging panels.

"In terms of the work, it was made abundantly clear at Cannes this year that regardless of how wonderful we really think we are down here in Australia, if it isn't good enough, it isn't good enough," says Geoff Clow, executive director at Emerald City.

Underwater filming to create a surreal look

MIDDLE EAST    October 11, 2005 22:24 (Edited: February 17, 2023 05:19)

Impressive underwater SFX created by Golden Square for Intergum, the biggest chewing gum manufacturer in the Middle East.

With Intergum launching a new brand of chewing gum, director Trevor Roberston wanted to represent the freshness of the new gum through an ethereal world centred on Turkey’s Miss World, Azre Azil. The aim was to show Azre moving like a mermaid in water, whilst she actually appeared to be on dry land.

To create a dreamlike world, where Azre could move with the fluidity and grace of a mermaid, Trevor enlisted Mike Valentine, one of the worlds leading underwater cameramen to film Azre in Pinewood Studio’s D Screen underwater tank.

Shooting at high speed, Azre was captured performing underwater, with her hair and flowing clothes swirling around her. She was then composited on to a magical grotto background, moving like an illuminated mermaid.
