Brazil is one of the main destinations in the Americas for asylum seekers. It primarily receives Syrians, Nigerians, Haitians and Angolans. With the aim of offering assisted therapy to the adults, seniors and children who come to Brazil every year, INATAA (the National Institute for Animal-Assisted Therapy and Actions, an NGO that promotes well-being through Animal-Assisted Interactions in clinics, hospitals, and other locations) struck a partnership with the State of São Paulo's Department of Social Development to create a pilot project called "The Refugee's Best Friend."

To promote the initiative, Wunderman Brazil created a campaign that encourages tolerance and shows the world the unconditional love dogs can give to people, regardless of their origins, providing emotional support to people who are feeling displaced and abandoned.

INATAA's new service project, in partnership with Casa de Passagem Terra Nova, an organization established by the São Paulo State Government to serve refugees, is being managed by multiple people. According to Cristiane Blanco, a psychologist and technical supervisor at INATAA, the therapy dogs help give emotional support to the refugees who are adapting to a new phase of their lives and who, in most cases, have left their friends and families behind in their countries of origin. “Unlike humans, dogs have no prejudices. They don’t make any distinctions based on ethnicity, religion or social class,” says Cristiane.

For Paulo Sanna, Creative Vice President at Wunderman Brazil, the campaign employs a cinematic language to encourage people to reflect on how the world would be a better place if everyone followed the example of dogs – https://youtu.be/h52Ga67wqaM. “Even as we face one of the greatest global social crises of our era, INATAA found a way to promote tolerance while also promoting their cause”, adds Sanna.

The video, which was directed by Lua Voigt and produced by Landia, one of INATAA partner’s, will be shown on TV and online media. It depicts the drama of refugees escaping war-torn regions in their journey for survival and a new place to belong. The video recreates scenes of conflict and human migration in a way that is universally relatable. The story will center on a child refugee named Ibrahim, who represents the loneliness and isolation of those who are forced to leave their home countries and face a new world. The relationship between the INATAA dog and the boy shows that the absence of prejudice can make the lives of both the boy and other refugees much more tolerable.
