Guest Judge: John Davenport, Ireland/Davenport, Johannesburg

 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   WORLDWIDE    December 23, 2014 03:03 (Edited: February 17, 2023 04:19)
BEST TV
Winner: B Cosmic. An interesting take on the make-up category with a perfectly timed twist. Although we've seen this kind of humour before, the scenarios were fresh and had me chuckling.

Runner up: D&AD. As one would expect, D&AD have crafted pure visual joy. It's gorgeous to watch and the sound design is spot on.

BEST PRINT
Winner: Styx Underwear: Living Room. I guess I'm a sucker for 'blokey' humour. I loved the execution and the attention to um... detail.

Runner up: Snickers: Santa Claus. Print was a fairly slim category this week, but this wasn't a bad 2nd. It's tactical, not much else to say really.

BEST OUTDOOR
Winner: Airwick: Home is in the Air. I knew where this was going about 5 seconds in, but that doesn't stop it from being standout. Highlighting the technology that goes into Airwick was very slick and the insight is solid. I can't help but feel the reactions were slightly staged and it would be great to see the idea being amplified into other mediums.

Runner up: Vodafone RED Light Application. There are a number of clever ideas here and in fact I thought the call to action pieces were a lot stronger than the app itself. The wax strip alone is worthy of some metal.

BEST INTERACTIVE
Winner: TMZ Jesus Comes to London. A really fun self-promotional idea that I'm sure ruffled a few feathers. It was compelling enough for me to read up on it. I only wish they'd closed the loop slightly in the video. I wish I'd found Jesus.

Runner up: KDDI Corporation: Sync Dinner. Another video that could have used a bit of editing down but the technology is seamless, emotional and considered.

This week's guest judge is John Davenport, co-owner and ECD at Ireland/Davenport in Johannesburg, South Africa.

John intended make a career as an academic. Sadly he was revealed to be not really clever enough for that and was forced into a career in advertising.

Which may be for the best, as he has had lots of fun making ads over the years. These ads have won a few awards which include several gold Lions, One Show pencils, Loerie Grand Prix etc. He has, however, been manifestly unsuccessful at winning D&AD pencils of any kind.

His career started at a tiny agency in Cape Town because all the other agencies in Cape Town quite wisely refused to hire him. He eventually got a job at McCann Cape Town before moving to Ogilvy JHB and then to Hunt Lascaris followed by an eight year stint at Network BBDO. Five years ago he and creative team mate Phil Ireland started Ireland/Davenport, and have been fortunate enough to attract clients like BMW, Investec, Vodafone, Avis and SA Tourism.

He has judged at the Cannes festival twice, and was voted juror with best singing voice on both occasions.
