 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   WORLDWIDE    May 25, 2020 10:54 (Edited: February 17, 2023 05:19)
BEST TV
Have you guys been watching TV lately? Obviously there's no way I was about to give any points to a Covid montage today. No way. But! I've also been inside my apartment in New York for 10 weeks, almost every friend has fled the city, and starting a big new job four seconds before the pandemic has made me feel constantly off my game. So that Nike spot hits a little different than the rest. And I really needed this rendition of Life on Mars today. I kinda wish Lebron didn't say 'right now we're fighting for something much bigger than a win', but you know what? He's right. And it's going to turn out ok, eventually. I'm really glad this spot exists, even if just to set the bar for the rest of us. We're allowed to do these ads, I guess, but we need to do better. Runner-up is the Aldi ad. Thanks for showing us that making a comedy dialogue spot in these socially-distant production times can turn out something charmingly weird, well-written and really well acted.

BEST PRINT
Full disclosure: this horny Trojan book of pornographic bread recipes is by my old team at 72andSunny NY and I worked on that account, so I'm definitely biased toward this piece. The team who made this are the most pure angels in the whole world of advertising, so just the idea of them having the various conversations necessary to execute this filth is especially amusing to me. Aside from one too many 69 jokes (yes, I can still give you feedback from here), it's a truly fun idea based on a great insight: people were baking too much bread and not having enough sex. I don't really love any of the other print on the ticket in this batch, but since they're forcing me, I'll pick the Social Distancing Whopper. I'm so impressed that agencies can somehow convince BK to promote burgers that nobody wants to eat.

BEST OUTDOOR
It seems like we're all mostly inside right now, so it makes sense that we don't really have much in the way of Outdoor (two of these are print ads and one is a media placement idea on face masks in grocery stores). That said, the Burger King idea takes a fun social-distancing jab at its next-door neighbour, McDonald's. Why do you guys even live next door? I also like the National Gallery idea of bringing the paintings you can't see out into public spaces via digital billboards, but it's very similar to the excellent "Grand Tour" campaign from years ago where they hung famous paintings all over London.

BEST INTERACTIVE
Something about a clever celebrity endorsement hack is so satisfying, and this one for Gatorade did a pretty good job of taking zero budget and making it into social media fame. Coming in a pretty close second place is the Coors Light Clone. I gave it a shot and had my drunk clone write these reviews which hopefully explains a few things.

BEST RADIO
I've got headphones on which is clearly the correct method of listening to the Western Power spot, which has a really well-executed and simple sound design. The way they moved the sound around my head to tell the story of two characters was delightful. Coming in second is the KAYO footy spot, also well-engineered and driven by some fun writing that makes me miss home and the outdoors and direct sunlight.
