The clear winner for me is Sarah Silverman for The National Women's Law Center. It cleverly uses comedy to approach a difficult and important subject. And provides the perfect piece of content for the daily blogger news cycle. It's always an honour to judge work of this standard and from some of the best agencies in the world. It's always hard to separate out campaigns and ideas from others. All have their own beauty and power. I'm in Wellington New Zealand filming a commercial with local director Taika Waititi at Curious Films.  This week's guest judge is Bram Holzapfel, creative director - customer engagement at DDB & Tribal Worldwide Amsterdam. It's always tricky to judge work at face value, especially out of local context. But there are some generic rules that apply to all advertising when it comes to separating the good from the bad or even the ugly. I know how tough it is for any agency to actually end up with the perfect result they envisioned when they set out to create a piece of work. It's a bit unfair to show this quintessentially British ad to an expat who's been away for 6 years. I'm vulnerable to anything that tugs at my ol' Blighty heartstrings; and this ad tugs in spades. And soon to be founding creative partners of Special Group, Sydney, Australia. Winner: Old Spice Robot. This is just so good. We're not going to critique it. It is what it is, enjoyable to watch, funny, that word that seems to creep onto briefs every now and again 'irreverent'. Oh, snap, we just critiqued it. I just got off the train from Paris, all fuelled up on madeleines, coffee and cigarettes and into the London office, straight into the Best Ads judging. READ MORE Guest Judges: Damon Stapleton + Shane Bradnick, DDB New Zealand This week's guest judges are Damon Stapleton, chief creative officer and Shane Bradnick, executive creative director at DDB New Zealand. As former clowns we both felt deeply for the circus performers in the Brother P-Touch ad. It is how we got most of our scars at a particularly rowdy circus beer tent in Bulgaria. Also it made us laugh. READ MORE Guest Judge: Michael Canning, group director, 72andSunny, LA This week's guest judge is Michael Canning, group director at 72andSunny, LA. Winner: The best TV for me is Jockey 'Supporting Greatness'. This is a funny idea and it's good to see a product like men's undies not taking things too seriously, while at the same time finding a statement that no man will disagree with at the cash register. READ MORE Guest Judge: Mark Tutssel, CCO, Leo Burnett, Worldwide This week's guest judge is Mark Tutssel, the chief creative officer at Leo Burnett Worldwide. Last weekend the new football season kicked off. Manchester United who sacked their manager David Moyes, and replaced him with one of the game's most celebrated and cerebral coaches, Louis van Gaal, were quickly reminded of the harsh realities of world's toughest league, with a humiliating home defeat to Swansea. READ MORE Guest Judges: Dave Gibson and Nathan Lennon, CDs, Droga5 NY This week's guest judges are Dave Gibson (right) and Nathan Lennon (left), creative directors at Droga5 New York. Winner: Assassin's Creed. Is this TV advertising's greatest ever foot chase? No. Because nothing will ever beat a bunch of cops chasing a gang of bank-robbing bogans, while trying not to spill their beers. That said, it certainly makes for some fun viewing. READ MORE Guest Judge: Gary Robinson, joint ECD, FCB Inferno, London This week's guest judge is Gary Robinson, joint executive creative director at FCB Inferno, London.Winner: Under Armour: I will what I want. A nice simple idea that's been beautifully shot and neatly edited - in fact the editing is one of the stars of this ad. READ MORE Guest Judge: Nick Worthington, creative chairman, Colenso BBDO This week's guest judge is Nick Worthington, creative chairman at Colenso BBDO, New Zealand. Winner: The Parent's Circle. It's a wonderfully simple misdirect, you naturally assume that racism is somehow at the heart of these people's motives, and in allowing yourself to believe that they don't want you here because you don't belong, you allow yourself to be caught by the truth, that these people have all lost loved ones, and are from both sides, and they are praying that you don't end up in their shoes. It gets my pick of the week. READ MORE Guest Judge: Nick Pringle, creative director, Grey New York This week's guest judge is Nick Pringle, creative director at Grey, New York. It's unpleasantly early in the morning here in New York, so I've caffeinated and eaten a pastry with an unpronounceable filling. In light of the pressing 12pm deadline, I'm going to try and keep short and sweet-ish. READ MORE Guest Judge: Andy Flemming, CD, M&C Saatchi, Sydney This week's guest judge is Andy Flemming, creative director, M&C Saatchi, Sydney. 1. Kids Co: See the child. A mixed bag this week. Nothing spectacular and a few flaws here and there. Let's take the Thai ad. Why does Dad think a newborn baby would have even the vaguest interest in an iPhone cartoon? And why doesn't he just pick the thing up the second it just starts crying? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for love over technology but a handy iPad beats love hands down when you have to fly one of them long haul. READ MORE Guest Judge: John Mescall, ECD, McCann Melbourne This week's guest judge is John Mescall, executive creative director at McCann Melbourne and soon to be global executive creative director at McCann Worldwide in New York. 1st Monty Python: Mick Jagger. Interesting that this comes from the agency known as IN HOUSE. The good stuff really can come from anywhere now. This spot is nicely written, deeply ironic, intelligently subtle and features a couple of really nice performances from Mick and Charlie. READ MORE Guest Judge: David Alberts, CCO, Mofilm, London This week's guest judge is David Alberts, chief creative officer at Mofilms, London. Best Ads on TV. Best Ads by name Best Ads by nature. So I'm writing this after watching yet another one of the amazing knock out games of the World Cup on the BBC. And I don't know if its just because I haven't seen any ads for over two hours but the spots I'm reviewing look really good. Judging right after the Cannes Lions is like eating a cake after a six course meal. Or having your 5th rose after 12 Heinekens at Baoli Beach. Or... well, you get what I mean. Anyway, here are my personal favorites of this week's best ads. READ MORE Guest Judge: Steve Elrick, ex regional ECD, BBH Asia Pacific This week's guest judge is Steve Elrick, ex regional ECD, BBH Asia-Pacific, based in Singapore. Doing the BestAds review in the midst of the Cannes cacophony, is probably like reporting on a Scottish Fourth Division match in the middle of the World Cup. But I guess the great thing is, no-one will be reading it - so you can write absolutely anything and get away with it. READ MORE Guest Judge: Andy Fackrell, regional CD, DDB Group Asia Pacific This week's guest judge is Andy Fackrell, regional creative director at DDB Group Asia Pacific. 1st. Sneaking in a week before kick-off, I think Beats may have just won the World Ad Cup. READ MORE Guest Judge: Mark Figliulo, CEO/founder, Figliulo & Partners, NY This week's guest judge is Mark Figliulo, CEO and founder of Figliulo & Partners in New York. Best: Adidas, "The Dream". The All or Nothing platform is great. The spot is full of superstars people can relate to, but what makes this spot stand out are the details. The new Kanye track fits perfectly and adds to the intensity. The art direction and even the end frame make the messaging feel urgent and full of passion. READ MORE Guest Judge: Malcolm Poynton, European CCO, SapientNitro Europe This week's guest judge is Malcolm Poynton, European chief creative officer at SapientNitro. This week's stand-out spot is from Ikea. We've all seen spots featuring the friendship of kids - Ikea's version, 'bringing spaces to life' is done with enough charm to win over any audience. Beautifully observed, the music is pitched just right and it feels like a little story rather than a sledgehammer of a retail ad. READ MORE Vale David Abbott (1938 - 2014) The world advertising industry will be saddened to hear of the death of David Abbott, arguably the greatest British copywriter of all time, who passed away yesterday aged 75. Droga5 Australia creative chairman David Nobay and head of art Daryl Corps created this homage to Abbott's famous poster for The Economist as the most fitting tribute they could think of. Corps worked at Abbott Mead Vickers, while Nobay ran Anthem in London, part of AMV Group, for a spell and had the honor of working under the great man for a week on a pitch. READ MORE Guest Judge: Brian Ford, co-founder + ECD, Zambezi, Los Angeles This week's guest judge is Brian Ford, co-founder and executive creative director at Zambezi, Los Angeles. The Winner: WATERisLIFE - The Girl Who Couldn't Cry. I wish I didn't know the title before watching this masterpiece. From frame one I was taken into the world of this girl, a girl who never cried. READ MORE Guest Judge: Richard Gorodecky, ECD, Amsterdam Worldwide This week's judge is Richard Gorodecky, executive creative director at Amsterdam Worldwide, Amsterdam. Winner:Autism Speaks. It's relatively easy, with a theme such as autism, to make work that moves people. But I'm not voting for this one on how much it moved me. I'm voting for this based on how damn smart and ambitious it is. READ MORE  For this year's Cannes Lions ad campaign, we teamed up with McCann London to create a print series, shot by award-winning photographer Max Oppenheim. The series perfects the art of stock photography with world-renowned creative professionals portrayed as super-positive, fist-pumping models.The campaign highlights the fact that attending the Festival inspires delegates to return to work with renewed enthusiasm, like a reset button of the creative mojo of even the most senior/jaded industry figures. VIEW THE AMIR KASSAEI AD VIEW THE ROYER, ANDERSON & SIM AD VIEW THE PALMER & GOTTLIEB AD VIEW THE HILTON & GREGORY AD Guest Judge: Wesley ter Haar, founder, MediaMonks, Netherlands This week's guest judge is Wesley ter Haar, founder and chief operating officer at MediaMonks, Hilversum, Netherlands. Winner: Axe Body Spray - Soulmates. It's the battle of the big boys, and Axe ends up with the girl. It might be the looks, or even the talent to play the perfect song, but above all it's the complete and utter confidence this swaggers in with. READ MORE Guest Judge: Bruce Henderson, CCO, Geometry Global, NA This week's guest judge is Bruce Henderson, chief creative officer, Geometry Global, North America. Winner: Cardstore: The World's Toughest Job. Numerous people (both in and out of the business) forwarded this to me last week and posted it to social media, which I think is indicative of the effect it had on popular culture. READ MORE Guest Judge: Jordan Atlas, SVP/ECD, Ignited, LA This week's Bestads guest judge is Jordan Atlas, SVP, executive creative director at Ignited in LA. Winner: Thai Life Insurance: Unsung Hero. A powerful bit of storytelling that unveils an authentic snapshot of humanity at its finest. I watched this over and over again, finding new elements that made it better with every viewing. READ MORE Guest Judge: Verneri Leimu, founding partner + CD, 358 Helsinki This week's guest judge is Verneri Leimu, founding partner and creative at 358 Helsinki. Winner: Honey Maid. It's always nice to see brands breathe the same air as their users. This is a good example of a brand with a strong point of view, courage to stand behind it and the ability to react. Waiting for the next episode. READ MORE Guest Judge: Simon Veksner, creative director, DDB Sydney This week's guest judge is Simon Veksner, creative director at DDB, Sydney. The best TV ad this week is for Nike. I know, I know, I know. They've won it before. But what can I do? This ad had the best idea, the best script, the best performances... and definitely the best gag involving the tossing of a caber. Watch it. READ MORE Guest Judge: Andrew Christou, CCO, Publicis, Seattle This week's guest judge is Andrew Christou, chief creative officer at Publicis, Seattle. 1st Choice: Action Contre La Faim: One Bullet. This haunting dissertation on the effects of one bullet, and it's not so subtle consequences really grabbed me. READ MORE Guest Judge: Pete Johnson, ECD, Arnold Worldwide, Boston This week's guest judge is Pete Johnson, executive creative director and creative lead at Arnold Worldwide, Boston. 1st Place: Mayhew Animal House "Unloved". Dogs. Dogs on skateboards. Dogs wearing sunglasses. Talking dogs. Dogs... They've been at the center of some of the most dreadful advertising of all time. But every so often we find the right tenor of a dog and its owner and through that, we uncover a truly natural, emotional story worthy of the real connection we share with our four-legged companions. I have a 13-year-old Black Lab, and as I watched this spot on my laptop on an over-booked American Airlines flight bound for Miami, I teared up a little as I imagined how special it is to watch her gleefully struggle to greet me every day I come home... So, you know. Dogs. READ MORE Guest Judge: Thomas Yang, deputy ECD, DDB Singapore This week's guest judge is Thomas Yang, deputy executive creative director/head of art & Design at DDB Singapore.1st is Google: We're all Storytellers. This is my favourite, because it's a very insightful piece of work we can all relate to (Who doesn't use Google?). Behind every great piece of work we create, is Google. It enables us to become storytellers, music composers... and even art directors I also love the honest and clear execution. READ MORE Guest Judge: Rob Palmer, Executive Creative Director, Doner, LA This week's guest judge is Rob Palmer, Executive Creative Director at Doner, LA. Alrighty then. Neuro Sleep: Sleep with Neil Patrick Harris is great stuff. And it gets greater with cameos by Problem and Asher. It's entertaining, does a great job of communicating what Neuro Sleep is, and it's chock full of sexual innuendo. However, the sing your product benefits gag is sort of familiar, and even though it is pretty self aware, Neuro Sleep comes in at Runner Up.  This week's guest judge is Jay Benjamin, chief creative officer at Leo Burnett, New York. Two singing cats, a singing budgie and a singing guy in an office chair. That's a lot of singing but at least maybe it shows we're in a better mood these days. Standing out from all of fun though is Tough Love from P&G, a powerful and insightful piece of film from a company that continues to show it understands the life of its most important customer, Mom.  This week's guest judge is Roger Camp, partner and chief creative officer at Camp and King based in San Francisco. Winner: The Sunday Times icons. It uses a similar take as Chrysler and brings to life a bunch of images that are each emotionally rich properties, but they did what Chrysler did the first few years - they presented them in a fresh way. The best film is, by far, the Woody Allen inspired Pedigree small dog spot. It's stupid in the best way possible.
