TV 'The Cougar' - GPY&R Melbourne

The idea of the unusual drinker with the made up title is not new, but what Steve Ayson does with it makes it very watchable indeed. Steve's off-beat humor may still be lost on many but won't be for long.

Very slim pickings in print, so the Nike 'Obsession' ad gets the nod. Not because the ad's good mind you, it's the elaborate agency comments that did it for us.

There's heaps of reasons why the brewery shouldn't have approved Flashbeer:
"Don't you reckon the lead guy could be percieved as a homo? Where is the drinking moment? And the party that follows? Do you really think this is something our drinker would do? And where are his 2 mates? (one of which must be of mild ethnic persuasion remember. But not too much, we don't want him looking criminal...) "

They can analyse it all they want - it's just fucking funny and that's why it works. Well done to you fellas. You've done a sterling job on Carlton and good on you for showing your client there is more than one way to move piss. Respect.

Nothing really moved me this week print-wise, except for maybe the bus. It was okay as a one off, but it's not really your long term solution to shifting a lot of laundry powder is it? What happens after the first day and all the clothes are brown and dirty and smoggy? Still, it's a cool stunt and the pedestrians in the foreground liked it so there. Nice ad.

The ever wonderful Ivan Zacharias does it again with this spot for Nike featuring Maria Sharipova. (Now that's a tough opening sentence, spelling wise.) The ad captures the weird contradiction at the heart of this super star - she looks like a supermodel but hits the ball like a grizzly bear on steroids. The sugary track is given a great twist by the jealous, hooded eyed peformers. It's left field, memorable, well shot and captures the essence of her. Game, set and match.

My print choice is the 'Korea' ad for Alteco super glue. It's so simple and uses a highly sensitive subject in just the right way to make its point. Sure, you should be able to do great ads for super glue but they have.

“Stuff of Legends”

Some funny TV ads this week. I love the sheer campness of Hoff Central. Fredrik Bond’s direction of the Hummer spot is pretty faultless too. But for me, Crispin’s ‘Stuff of Legends’ comes out tops. Yes, I know it’s yet another ‘mockumentary’ style ad, but a Nascar driver trying to eat a whole chicken off a pole is bloody funny.

Bavaria Beer ‘Squid’

Not in the same league as the TV ads this week. As posters, I like the impact of the Aussie animals wrapped up for winter for Castlemaine, but that kind of thing has been done a lot for Extra Cold beers. So I’m going to go for the KesselsKramer ‘Giant Squid’ ad for Bavaria beer. The use of consecutive right hand pages isn’t exactly fresh, but the ‘50’s illustration style is. I also like any ads that take the piss out of macho beer culture.

I wanted to like the Virgin Money work but the idea of Blingola was better than the ad it spawned. There appeared to be multiple spec ads but only one acknowledged it. In the end, I'll have to go with Mr. Kitchenhand. Is it real? I don't know. Does he help stop crime or does he commit it? I don't know that either. But he makes me laugh.

VIRGIN MOBILE USA—MOTHER

Mother’s “Giving back the power of the Penny” work for Virgin Mobile texting makes me glad to be alive. It’s a smart idea, big and genuine as Honest Abe himself. It gives me a freebie mask so I can go around masquerading as a dead president, and it motivates me to want to rally behind the whole save-the-Penny cause. Killing Death. Its a simple, yet strangely unexplored idea. The very thought of giving the Grim Reaper a kick up the you-know-where is universally appealing. Using animation is a nice touch. It adds the necessary humour to bring alive a concept that any good creative would die for.

If it wasn't in the family, we'd quite like to have voted for Swing Portrait. Music plays a big role. The consolidated athlete-brand-product message reflects an honest Nike spirit. However, we're going with Standoff for its sheer playfulness. Sure we've seen the formula before. And it should have been set in a bank. But the little details - spinning tray in a still cafe; the taxi driver's delayed death throes - won us over.

So, for the films I hesitated a lot between "the balls" and "Happiness Factory" ... for cok(e) .
As with women's breast ads, so it's cool to know that we can have the same problems, and that we can solve them. Coke is not a new idea, but so well executed ( it makes me think about the animation film "robots"), and so while it's new for Coke, it's not so new in onirism ( honda did it some years ago and everybody , with money, does the same). Really Good film, but I prefer the Balls. Best film: the balls.

Found the technique in the crouch vs Lewesy very engaging, but must favour
the orange Segal spot. Great evolution of the first campaign. Much better in
fact. More space to exploit the celebrities used, even like Steve's acting
for a change. Mr Dresden gets better and better. Understand it was expensive
due to cast member but could have pushed the action/explosion side even
more.

Like the dynajets idea but it's lowe so I'll pass. Do like the skate stuff especially the use of the multiple image usually found in skate and board mags. Love the logo and type treatment. Never mind drivers, not all creative directors can see the funky patterns in the road safety ads.

Again, in print, two executions stood out. The BBC World ' See both sides' execution is a clever use of the corner poster site. But for me, it's another win for Lynx with their 'World Cup contract'. Although there is a suggestion that this may have been influenced by an email that was circulating recently, it is a snug fit with the brand's tone of voice.

Just back from Cannes where I was exposed to the best work in the world and a small brewerys annual output of ale, so Im not necessarily in the best state to give a well-rounded, considered judgement of the weeks ads. On the other hand, maybe it will help. Anyway, here goes..

The 6 ads under the banner TV cover a wide range of Cannes categories. Here we have content, idents, an event, charity ads, and even straightforward conventional TV advertising. This makes it all but impossible to judge them against each other, but I think the power of the anti-prostitution ad shades it for me. Not sure about the bet youre feeling stupid now approach to the line, but the idea is strong and the execution good.

Of the print ads, the Socceroos campaign was a good thought, once Id figured out that the bloke was the personification of History. But the Jo-burg zoo ads won it for me, simply and cheekily putting across the news that the zoo is open at night. Its not a classic campaign [partly because there are only two ads] but it stood out from the rest.

Each week we'll be asking a Creative Director or prominent creative ... from somewhere in the world ... to choose the bestad from last week's TV & PRINT/OUTDOOR.

To kick it off, here's Jae Goodman, Co-ECD Publicis & Hal Riney San Francisco. He's the one on the right in the pic (with Co-ECD Jon Soto on the left).

Jae Goodman: c'mon, who doesn't love a musical? so that made this a tough week with both rexona and folgers in the mix (and the other rexona spot was almost a musical). but it's folgers for me. it just had the right sensibility (if you can call it that) - the glowing sunshine folgers people were wonderfully perfectly creepy and annoying - just like real people who for some awful reason are legitimately happy to greet each day.

a good week though. black balloons really made me think.

Jae Goodman: okay, weird mix. the aids thing is disturbing, which is the point, i know. and as for the ad world cup - i actually think some of those "terrible" ads would make great ads - so damned honest. it's a smart way to call bullshit on what all of us do for a living. but i'm going with whiskas for my favorite. i usually don't go for the visual gags, but i just know my childhood cat, porky, was all hunter on the inside.
