The one piece of work that held my attention was an animated spot for
Aides. Based on what looks like Walt Disney's 'Steamboat Willie'. (Maybe it's a homage to him? Protect your Willie). The title card at the beginning and the style of the animation echo this Disney classic. It follows the sexual exploits and nine lives of the pussy cat, Smutely, as he plays away with a turtle, bunny rabbit, blowfish, dolphin, a bondage pig, three seals, red cocks and an elephant with jumbo nuts...

Best TV: My top pick is the Moths ad for Earth Hour. It's well executed, a funny and clever way to promote something without being too worthy or making people feel guilty. In Australia this could actually happen at certain times of the year.

Tough one to start with. No clear winner for me, so I'm going to give it to the good people of Vietnam for their rather disturbing AIP coffin spot. I once rode a moped in Saigon and it was horrifying, so I'm all for putting helmets on those cute little Vietnamese kids.

Sometimes an idea doesn't have to be new to be fresh.
We've got a number of familiar themes this week. But some are none the worse for it.

The Word has a classic volkswagen-y feel about it. They've also managed to cram in the entire range and numerous attributes from affordability to spaciousness. A tour de force without feeling forced. (As they don't say in Germany.) The 'Life on Mars' era 'woman driver' joke ruins it a bit for me but otherwise it's pretty timeless.

Best TV: Skittles This ad works for me. It looks fresh from the get-go. The opening shot with two giant clenched fists, with one man inside each fist, is already a funny setting. When was the last time you've seen anything like this? The dialogue is sharp and I don't feel manipulated.
One man says, "So where are we going to get a giant bag of Skittles?" The other guy responds, "I don't know." They both laugh nervously. Duh.
It works because it tells you the joke in a very clever way and the product is relevant throughout. Brilliant!

Best TV:
Axe - Even Angels Will Fall. This just came through as the biggest idea in the pack. What an unexpected way to demonstrate the power of the product's formula without ever mentioning a word. It's understated, simple and dramatic at the same time. I can just hear the guys around the globe wondering, "If it can corrupt angels, it should certainly work on the girl in cubicle C." Only felt the arc near the end could have gone a notch higher. Still, another great one for Axe.

VW 'Old Lady'. This is just a simple idea of turning an old convention on its head with a classic story telling narrative. I'm sure the father, son, old lady and car all have Facebook pages and you can probably follow the old lady on twitter and see which Bingo hall she checks into with Foursquare, but this is a nice old-school TV commercial that makes a great brand statement.

https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/upload/photo.jpg Best ad. I watched each one, then went back and read the contextual notes and watched each again. The clear winner is Johnnie Walker by BBH London and Blink. While it's usually easier to create a good ad with the powerful subject matter provided by charities and orgs, when comparing ad to ad, this one still felt strongest. The idea is a good extension of the well-known campaign line, Keep Walking, resonating on many levels. The personal real facts of Herreman's life, his amazing dedication and achievements, make for a more powerfully felt message than the usual ad entertainment tap dance.

https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/upload/Gustavo%20Asman.jpgTV Winner: Tommy Hilfiger. Each day has 1,440 minutes. It would have never crossed my mind before that I would spend 3 and a ½ of them just watching a navy blue blazer's journey. Even more surprising was to find myself watching it for the third, and fourth time with the same amount of interest. And to make things worse - or actually better - this is a brand I hardly relate to.
I believe the film is fresh, engaging, has a great execution, nice turns and twists through out the story, and minor details like the sleeve that gets ripped and fixed that make it just... the winner.

TV Winner: ASB Bank 'Mint Sauce'. I feel that people in the ad business can still learn a lot from spot like this. At times, story can take a back seat to the unlimited possibilities of cgi. This spot pulls you in to a moment a lot of people across the globe can identify with, the childhood longing for a particular toy or whatever the object might be.
