Golf Auditions. When you don’t stay sharp at 3pm you’ll have no energy and will become one of the girls from ‘Addicted to Love’ video by Robert Palmer. A pretty absurd premise but it got me to check out the Emerald Nuts website which revealed a series of other funny TV spots which are equally wacky but brilliant. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen in the snacks category! Runner-up Vodafoneis one of the most stunning piece of film I’ve seen for a long time. Accompanied by an equally outstanding piano soundtrack to demonstrate the mobility of Internet on your hand-phone. If I had this brief I would never have thought about it this way. Each scene is seamless interwoven to slowly reveal a cityscape made of mobile screens. I’m not too crazy with the fireworks finale but the journey throughout was great.

BEST PRINT
Fab from Leo Burnett Singapore is one of the few demonstration ads that make the point clearly but cleverly. Although it’s not a new strategy in the product category, it’s brought to life by fresh yet simple art direction. I particularly like the photographic style, which had a hint of fashion. The whole campaign feels very consistent and I’m sure it will do well in future award shows. Runner-up is Energizer. Scary things that happen in the dark for Energizer from DDB South Africa is an extremely campaignable idea that I can see going forever. At first, it looked like a camera ad selling it’s night shot benefit until you get to the logo. Drinking from the cup where your grandpa put his false teeth is pretty funny. It really depends on how ‘dark’ you want the humor to be. (Forgive the pun).

BEST OUTDOOR
Trying to explain the fact of science in an interesting way is never easy. That’s why I really like the Sneezing Transit Shelter from Rethink Vancouver. I can imagine the shock when my face is sprinkled with the ‘sneeze’ after pressing the button. Once it’s got my attention, the down to earth personality of the voice-over makes the fact much easier for me to sink in. I simply love the interactive nature of this bus shelter. Hope to see a series of these in the future. Runner-up:BBC Missing countries maps is a great way for New Yorkers to be get interested in places that they might not be interested in. In some ways, the world is like a big jigsaw puzzle and some of the pieces are missing. It’s a great way to spread the news about BBC news through the use of ambient. Country maps placed randomly all over town will make a nice art installation piece that might find a place in someone’s home.

GUEST JUDGE: GUY ROOKE, EX CRISPIN PORTER + BOGUSKY, MIAMI

 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   USA    December 19, 2007 15:53 (Edited: February 17, 2023 04:19)

Rooke's accolades include multiple Cannes Lions, One Show Pencils, Clio Statues, and D&AD acceptances. His new posting is soon to be announced.

BEST TV
I really like the idea of 'No Evil' for Net 10 from Droga5 as it feels big, like it can be taken in all directions and executed well in all sorts of media (and I'm sure it has). But this is television alone that's being looked at here, so with that in mind the simplicity and humor of the Olympus spot gets my nod.

BEST PRINT
A couple of examples of old school print done well, and that's Let kids be kidsand Lights off. But seeing as the 'Lights off' ad would be stronger if it was done for real as a billboard execution using the lights of the billboard at night, I'm giving this week's first prize print ribbon to 'Let kids be kids'.

BEST OUTDOOR
Some interesting attempts at using outdoor in fresh ways, but only one piece really nails it, and that's Waterworld. It's a great example of placement turning a two-dimensional image into a relevant three-dimensional experience. Involving. Effortless. Nice work.

GUEST JUDGE: ANDY BLOOD, PARTNER & ECD, TBWA\WHYBIN\TEQUILA NZ

Wow. Now I'm in the shit. "Write about the best and a runner up. Do a positive piece. And remember, your audience is global". I'm struggling here. Do I lie-and make friends? Or tell the truth and lose some. Fortunately Lance Armstrong is on hand: 'Kill the coward/Feed the warrior'. Lance is right. I must "waste the wimp" (Copyright Blood 2007). This is the only spot I went back and watched six times. Nice script and nice deadpan performance from a famous person. No runner up. Second place is first loser, right?

BEST PRINT
There's a really nice adidas Olympics campaign here but I really shouldn't show my allegiances. Instead I'll nominate the Museum of Childhood work. I love the art direction and the illustration. The headlines aren't great, but they'e not bad.

BEST OUTDOOR
A very strong Amnesty idea but it would be wrong for me to make it number one, so I'll go for the Stop Whaling idea from the brilliantly named 'Republic of Everyone'. They should go and run this idea in Japan.

'Speechless' I work most of the time in LA. The current writers' strike is a big topic there. As a writer and director myself, I totally support the WGA stand. It will be interesting to see if the actors do join the writers for their scheduled upcoming strike.
This spot(s) has a good, strong, simple idea. Using the Internet medium that is the heart of the debate over the strike is nicely relevant too. How many people will see these “little films” and the writers will not get paid for it? Will advertising move to being paid per view/showing as TV shifts to Internet? It already is at HoneyShed.com.
I’m a fan of George Hickenlooper’s past directing work on feature documentaries. These “Speechless” spots have star power, good documentation, inspiring music, great relevance and magnitude in their 20 spot campaign. However, they only need the one “speechless” sign at the end and no tape over the mouth and less scenes. But maybe the writers were too busy starving to fully write the scripts.
Topical and socially important issues are easy to write ads for. Burgers, beer, cars, sweets and video games are harder. In my humble opinion, each of the other spots for these products had certain good qualities, but nothing that made them rises above the other. I liked them all a little.

BEST PRINT
1st place. Renault Megane 'Cabriolet' Fresh, eye catching use of type. Get’s the mental cogs turning, leaves you with a little life insight and rewards by linking straight to a product benefit. Love the shot of the car. Go Chile!
2nd place. Synergy Electricity Quick and slick. I would stop to read it in a magazine and retain the message. Reasonable use of the common V.J. formula. (Visual Juxtaposition) Art direction feels clean, streamlined, happy and efficient - how this environmental electrical service may feel to its users.

BEST OUTDOOR
1st place. Recruitment Fair 'Stop the traffik' Great stuff. Real life experience with the ad message is so much more effective than print or TV/ Net. I’ll bet a lot of people at the recruitment fair were very surprised and remembered the point about sex slavery and human trafficking. I’m sure they all signed the petition. Now I’m going to; www.stopthetraffik.org
2nd place. Crime investigation channel- this interactive piece works well for that type of TV show, whether you like that genre of TV or not. It probably got a lot of double takes, then realised nervous laughs and hopefully many new viewers of the show. Good use of an account service person.

GUEST JUDGES: MATT SMITH + DEREK GREEN, SAATCHI'S PARIS/GENEVA

They roam this region meeting weird and wonderful people while trying to beat what the Saatchi NY office achieved last year at Cannes.

Like our photo, The Ode to Axehad the best intentions of being funny and macho but turned out to be quite frankly, gay. So our thumbs up must go to the Carling commercial. Nice insight. Great use of beards.

BEST PRINT
We have to reach for the abstain button on this one, as it's our team that produced the Head & Shoulders 1961 campaign. So we can't say that it's the greatest H&S ad we have ever seen. Nor can we say that Nick, Jorg, Daniela and Arturo are all legends. So coming in 2nd place, sorry 1st, is the Wall Campaign for the Audio Products Group.

BEST OUTDOOR
When it comes to outdoor we thought the Bayantel DSL 'Problem Downloading' billboard was a good use of the medium but for us the real standout was the Mitsubishi campaign from Brazil. It's a beautifully crafted campaign and should do well during the festival season.

Honeyshed of course. Teething problems are to be expected with anything this experimental. But without a doubt the biggest idea on the site in a while.  GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   NETHERLANDS    November 14, 2007 18:56 (Edited: February 17, 2023 04:19)

BEST TV
Nice range of stuff here, from the very big budget Guinness to the super lo-fi Allstate viral. So first of all, let me eliminate the cheats. The Bud-Lite 'Dude' spot was enjoyable, if somewhat of a 'Wassup', 2.0, but there were 5 creative directors involved. That's blatant cheating. Similarly, FreeCreditReport.com very sneakily posted three spots. And while they were weird, they were nowhere near weird enough. Ditto, the Allstate viral which was nearly two minutes long. Cheating. And the Lifesaver ad clearly involved an illicit exchange of money just to make it into the best 6. Which leaves me with Guinness and Maxitop, both created from good, honest toil. The Guinness ad is big, impressive and fun to watch, but just a tad too conceited, so I'm going to give the nod to the sweet, simple and wonderfully executed Maxitop ad (although I admit that showing naked women lathering up in the shower is not exactly fair play).

BEST PRINT
Firstly, let me once again weed out the cheats. Taking the piss out of the French is too easy, therefore a form of cheating. En plus, je suis Francais. Likewise, making fun of polo players and doing an ad for a recycled clothing store is just too easy. So this one's a no-brainer for me as a writer who grew up listening to Haircut 100. Instead of the wordless minimalism of the bulk of the work here, the Wispa ad gives me line upon line of juicy copy evoking the spirit of the 80s. In short, I could relate. I just hope, that I'm the target market.

BEST OUTDOOR
Things have really got out of hand here, unfortunately. I'm instantly docking points from the lubricant gel Gay Pride Parade idea and the street stencil idea for a Sex Shop in Singapore. That's reprehensible cheating. And while all the other ideas don't resort to such easy means, they're just not very good. So I'm giving the gong to the HarvesTED idea, simply because they used the words webisode‚, monitor‚ and bluetooth‚ in the description of the idea. Now that's impressive use of technology.

GUEST JUDGE: TOBY TALBOT, EXECUTIVE CD, DDB NEW ZEALAND

GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   NEW ZEALAND    November 08, 2007 05:34 (Edited: February 17, 2023 04:19)
https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/upload/Toby-TALBOT-NEW-SMALL.jpgThis week’s guest judge is Toby Talbot, Executive Creative Director of DDB Auckland. Toby has been at DDB since the beginning of February and has been very busy indeed (see 2007 BestAds Agency Rankings above). Before DDB, Toby spent two years as Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Auckland. And prior to that, eight years at Colenso BBDO where he and then partner Leo Premutico helped take the agency to the heady heights in The Gunn Report. Toby is currently ranked No 2 Creative Director in Australasia in the Campaign Brief Creative Rankings and No 2 in CB's The Work 07 Annual. His work has been recognized at The One Show, Cannes, Clio and D&AD.

BEST TV
Nice telly this week. Really nice. Hard to pick a winner. The Helen Bamber Foundation sex trade spot was deeply disturbing, as you’d expect with an amazing performance by Emma Thompson involving brutal rape. An Oscar worthy performance in an ad. Never thought I’d see the day. Much though I admire the work of Garth Davis, I was a little put off by the fact that Herringbone was three minutes long. Tad self indulgent perhaps? On the contrary, it flew by. Faultlessly shot, nice story, simple relevant idea. If only you were called bestadsoncinema it would have got my choice hands down, so to speak. But you’re not so it didn’t. Instead I’m going for Sony Walkman Music Pieces by Samuel Akesson and Tomas Mankovsky, CD'd by that bloody little over-achiever, Juan Cabral. Hi Juan. My only quibble is the line. ‘Sound like no other’ doesn’t have the power (or meaning) of ‘Colour like no other’. I feel the client’s hand here.

BEST PRINT
Unlike TV, the print this week feels a little ho hum. I sort of like Dazed & Confused, although I can’t help thinking it looks like a still from what would be an excellent TV spot. And the line, ‘Censor the mundane’ sounds like the sort of line the 14 year old editor of the magazine wrote after one too many Red Bulls. I don’t want to comment on anything else for fear of reprisals.

BEST OUTDOOR
There’s a bit going on outdoors. But still not a patch on this week’s TV. I’m tempted by Batman Begins – clever use of those bright lights you see in the pavement. Only it falls short for me because you can’t see the sign lit up in the sky. Did it actually work? We’ll never know. So instead my choice this week is Trident. Yes, it does feel a little derivative of one of those nasty battery chicken ads from yonks ago but it’s a great little installation. And what’s more, I have no doubt that this ad worked brilliantly as a deterrent. Wow, fancy that. An ad that actually works!

In his first year at Burnett, he and partner Reed Collins won Cannes lions for work on Altoids. Before coming to Burnett, Bob spent three years at Goodby, Silverstein and Partners in San Francisco. He spent his formative years in advertising with DDB, where he created the Budweiser “Real Men of Genius” campaign and won Gold Lions in both the television and radio categories. Over the course of his career, he has also won at D&AD, the One Show, Clios and Communications Arts.

BEST TV
I don't know, I wanted to love something here, I really did, but we turned out to be just great friends. Maybe I wasn't drunk enough. The Audiad I found to be quite beautiful. I couldn't wait for the car to get built so I could see it in all its glory. The music was a great and unexpected choice. And the tag line: 'the slowest car we've ever built' is, I think, a great twist once I figured out that it's because it takes so long to build (unlike the car, I'm slow). But a long road to get there and I wonder if there couldn't have been a more surprising route. I also enjoyed the spectacle of the Lexuspop up storybook spot. I want that book for my kids. And I really do think it is a nice technique and fresh for the category. But I think maybe they made a cool book but forgot about the story a little. Right?

BEST PRINT
God, I feel like such a tool. You're all going to hate me. I swear I am trying. But I am not totally feeling it here. Maybe I'm on my advertising period. The Lowenbrauad was nice in its simplicity and restraint. And pretty surprising for a beer ad. And the Negroniad, well, it's a landscape made of meat. That right there is pretty great. You wake up and the sky is made of bacon and, hell, that's going to be a good day. But aside from being technically marvelous, I wish there was a bigger thought to connect it to. Am I wrong? Write me, fill me in guys.

BEST OUTDOOR
OK, we're in business. I'm not a total a-hole. The Slow Downbillboards are really great. Surprising and fresh and sure they might make you crash looking at them while you're driving but dang if that isn't a nice powerful thought. Well done. Yeah for advertising. And then I thought the Salvation Army human billboard would be really, really tough to ignore and hard to forget, which is exactly the point I think. And the WWF ad even though my partner Reed (Collins) says is a bad comping job is a very nice, simple powerful way to make a point.

GUEST JUDGE: JOHN KANE, FOUNDER, HAPPY SOLDIERS, SYDNEY

I feel like someone is setting me up. I can’t go by the WTF? – Mr. Treespot. It has stayed with me long after the viewing and I think it might stay with me quite a while longer. Everything about it is wrong which is probably why it’s right. WTF? Exactly. I also quite liked the Telenorspot. I wonder can you get to watch the WTF? ad on your mobile though.

BEST PRINT
Nothing overly exciting here but then again they did follow two frolicking girls and an aroused tree. I liked the Killing Tigersad because it’s true. Nicely produced also.

BEST OUTDOOR
Lots of great ideas here. Outdoor always seems to have an extra element to it now. No straight up posters anymore. I thought the Trainidea was a really simple, clean use of the space. Well done to those involved. I also must mention the Stairs, again lovely. And the Hierarchy Chartwas really good but felt more DM than outdoor.

I viewed the print last night. This morning I only remembered a Skunk as a pet for an air freshener. For that reason it wins my vote. A couple confused me, so I hope I didn’t miss something big.

BEST TV
Best for me was Gali Aligator Nice one. Didn't feel like an ad. I loved the insight for Volvo (Showroom) because it reminded me of some lonely ad execs. But I found the execution a tad commercial (super and talent). I also liked Wrecking Hammer, but it suffers from a cliché tough VO dude. Thought Post was fun for a bit. NYC Ride seemed like a smart angle. The anger management spoof might be tired, but I still enjoyed it. Nice bunch though I thought.

BEST OUTDOOR
Everything here craps on my outdoor. So obviously I liked them all.
My two equal favourites: Squeaky Cleanand SuperspeedThey blow me away actually. One is so, so smart. The other is just very, very witty. Funny even. Brilliant.

Play-DohJust impossible to deny it. Big production. Big budget. Big director. Big city. Big music. Big bunny. Big commercial. Maybe because it feels so BIG, it makes me appreciate the simplicity of Sony “Balls” even more.

BEST PRINT
The Economistcampaign. I love it. Beautiful layout. Very well written lines. What else do you need? Not easy to keep up the good work, campaign after campaign, ad after ad, and that seems to happen at AMV BBDO with their ads for The Economist, just the same way DDB London does it with their Harvey Nichols campaigns.

BEST OUTDOOR
I really liked the Mechanicsoutdoor from DDB NZ. Very smart and simple idea with a very nice execution. Just great. Congrats to the creatives and to the guy who put the piece together.

BEST TV
This week's best TV was a toss up between the new Dove Self-Esteem Fundand JC Pennyspots. It's a hard one to call, and unlike a Grand Prix, I'm going to give it to both. Simply because, while the Dove spot is a follow up and we always know how sequels are never as good as the original, this one delivers just as much emotion as the first. It makes you realize just how much the media bombards young females with messages of how to conform to beauty. And this is no where more true than here in the States.
And on JCPenny. Well, what they have done for the brand here is simply magic in itself. What used to be an awful heavy retail brand, is now a superbly crafted and uniquely ownable brand idea. I can see someone's love marks all over this.

BEST PRINT
Sorry I can't really pick one from this bunch. If my hand was forced,
I still couldn't.

BEST OUTDOOR
This week's best of outdoor goes to Standard Bank. It's a smart use of the media, much like the outdoor Economist ad with the light bulb. My only comment and am sure the creatives thought of it is; it would have been brilliant to see the bat swing back and forth hitting the ball. I guess it was probably a budget thing. But nice one it's sure to score a 6.

"The best TVC is very hard for me to pick. I have two in my mind; both are super craft in the area of production which gives more value to the spots. They are X-BOX Hola 3 "Believe" and Nike "Leave nothing".

For X-BOX "Believe", I feel, like, if I were a boy or was a boy; this ad will make me want to jump in for this game. There is such a great visual in the dramatic model... so new... so amazing to look at. The Michael Mann production, Nike, is superb even though it is only another "Just Do It" ad but this one jokes with the common phrase "Leave everything on the field"... so cool!! But if I really had to choose between these two; (so hard to decide!!) I would pick "Believe".

I almost couldn't decide in print but there are two ads that catch my eye - Fayreform Lingerie "Work your curves" and Time Out Magazine "Time Out Lisboa". I'm not that sure if the creative of "Work your curves" is actually targeting women because the first thing that caught my eye was the fake ape... so funny!! The other one, Time Out Lisboa with the headline "what you do at home is your business, what you do outside is ours", all I can say is Funny, Funny, Funny."

Micah Walker has just arrived at his new gig in Sydney, fresh
from a successful four years in London, most recently as
co-creative director at Fallon.

I hate to sound defeatist, but this week is really hard.

BEST TV
To be honest, I'm hard pressed to pick a winner.
The Jeep spot feels like a school project,
the Nike spot, well, just isn't funny, and
the Orange spot, although beautiful in
moments, is a pretty unoriginal idea that's far
too long. I think if you took all the titles and voice
over off the Wilkinson Sword animation and
just let it play out as a story, it's the most unique
idea, even if it's full of film cliches. Call me ten,
but the fart's the best part.

BEST PRINT
I'd have to go with the Albatross ad for

GUEST JUDGES: MATTY BURTON AND DAVE BOWMAN, DROGA 5, NEW YORK

 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   USA    September 13, 2007 20:36 (Edited: February 17, 2023 04:19)

Matty Burton and Dave Bowman, a hot senior team at Droga 5, New York, pick their fav ads from this week's crop on bestads.

In TV, the stand out winner for us has to be the Thrifty 'Birthday' spot. What a tight bastard. Really well executed. Simple. Hilarious. Well done guys.
Coming in second would have to be 50 percent of the Snickers 'Feast' campaign - the Horn execution, which felt inspired, fresh and untouched by too many hands and opinions. Sadly, the Intro spot felt like the exact opposite. Such a shame. Hairy guys in weird costumes in a beat up shitbox should have been a recipe for something funnier.
Other spots we felt were worthy of a mention were the Volkswagen 'Interview' spot which felt smart (and bang on brand) and the Partnership For A Drug Free America 'Best Friend' spot where a dog talks to a girl who smokes weed (only because dogs DO talk to you when you smoke weed. We were told. By someone we met once. At a party.)

As for Print or Outdoor, the Safety - Track Crossing 'Too Many Didn't' idea was head and shoulders above the rest. Feels like it would have a real effect if you saw it. And it's targeting the people perfectly. As for the runner up, we have both been locking horns for days trying to figure out which ad pips which at the post to take this title. Either that or we felt that nothing else was really worthy of a mention.

Guy Moore reviews last week's Best TV and Best Print. (To view the work, click on the Archives at left).

In TV my favourite is Harvey Nichols Foodmarket 'Backstage' I really like this ad, for a start I thought why am I watching this, a goat vomiting into a urinal, a hen tapping a few lines of cocaine, lots of lovely beautiful women and a typical camp organiser. Very beautifully shot, great observations and touches, very David LaChappelle. The end punch line is great, Harvey Nichols now has a food store. BMP once again at its best.
Then in no particular order are my comments on the rest of the TV.
Cadbury Dairy Milk 'Gorilla' Instead of the typical woman having an orgasm on a sofa as she indulges in chocolate they choose a gorilla playing drums. Very brave, very mad, very different for a very tough category.
Buenos Aires Zoo 'Yawn' A sweet little film that was the
perfect time length to get over the message.
AT&T 'Another battle' Nice concept, I'd have liked to have
seen more, but the ending obviously ate into time.
Anti-litter 'Walk like a duck' In principle this commercial showed all the signs of being a good one, I feel it needed more money to give it justice.
Vodafone 'Time theft' An obvious concept but with good editing, good music, and great touches it rises above all other mobile phone ads.
OK. Now onto press.
My favourite without a shadow of a doubt is for Bazooka bubble gum 'Air Bag' Very simple, very funny. As a kid Bazzoka was the best at blowing bubbles and it gave you jaw ache into the bargain. You can't get a big bubble with Juicy Fruit. Also the poor kid is going to spend several hours trying to dislodge it from his eyebrows. Oh happy days!
Amnesty International 'Man hole sticker' Very powerful and would stop anyone in their tracks.
Lolane Head Up Styling 'Punk' Very arresting as a piece of art direction. I hope there were others in the series as it makes for a great campaign.
Florida Coalition against Human Trafficking 'Girls' A deftly handled piece of communication that doesn't bear thinking about.
Land Rover 'Tackle Pads' All Land Rover ads are good, but I must admit this isn't quite in the league of the Masai warriors.
Sky TV Crime and Investigation Channel 'Inside their minds' What a great brief. Sadly the visual seems far too familiar and somewhat lazy.

We're suckers for a vignette ad, and particularly ones with Gene Wilder singing Willy Wonka songs, so we were very fortunate this week that the good folks at bestadsontv happened to come up trumps. Here we have an ad for sky movies showing how nice it is when things aren't interrupted by ads. A bit of an odd dichotomy for people who write ads for a living, in fact we probably shouldn't really have chosen it as best in show. never mind, it's still a very worthy winner. Lovely.

We liked the idea of the Stella "innovative brand experience", but without actually being able to experience it, we couldnt really award it this weeks best. However, it did sound very interesting so we gave it third place. It was down to two, Suicide versus Eurostar. After a lengthy discussion we decided that the Eurostar ad was a funny image, but ultimately it made us feel a bit sick, so awarded it second place. Therefore, we decided the Suicide Prevention Centre campaign should be this weeks bestadsonawall. A very clever piece of visual communication and the most creative thing this week. Marvelous.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

TV

There were a lot of brilliantly produced spots this week, but I'd have to say my favourite was the one that cost the least to produce (at least 1/100th less than the others). The Arnet spot is an absolutely absurd idea right down to the first-time-iMovie-user-generated execution. It gave me a pretty good chuckle. And how can you not like Irene Cara?

My vote for best print this week would definitely go to the Jornal Da Tarde Classified work. Itâs brilliant. So incredibly simple and engaging. It was an excellent idea to take what would normally be a pretty mundane and stale execution in print/online out into the ambient space, so I hope that's where it stayed. Well done.

Shit, I just saw the Sony ads for Cybershot, and I have to say they are sweet. Sweet like California sweet, it more or less means really good. When it comes to selling a camera and the memories and the fotos and all that stuff, it is very hard to do. These are so clever in many ways. I've tried it (with mild success). TV
I got home just in time to review this week's ads with my daughter Nastassja, before putting her to bed. Apart from jumping up and down on the table and trying to sit on my PowerBook, she was pretty focused. Her favourite was the MTV donkey trying to save the planet (very funny). I quite liked the Amstel Light ad, which made me laugh and Nastassja clap.

However, the best of the bunch has to be Barnardo's - 'Never give up' because the message has clarity and the acting conviction. It's not about the swearing, it's about the subtext. Also, last week I came across the press ad in the Metro and I actually brought it into work and showed a few people because I thought it was so restrained and brilliantly simple. And yes I did text the number and it would be great if everyone reading this did too (Text BELIEVE to 84862).

PRINT
I must confess when I viewed this work Nastassja was getting a bit restless (it was way past her bedtime), which meant focusing on some print advertising was not really a priority. If an ad was going to get my attention it had better be fucking quick and be saying something worth listening to. Then I saw the Rock Trust ad about childhood memories.

This ad works on so many levels. Emotionally it's spot on. Visually it tells so many different stories and triggers so many different insights into a child's quality of life. For me however, the thing I like most about this ad is, intentionally or not, it says that sometimes a child's life, on the surface, can often seem perfectly normal and in many ways triumphant but in reality be utterly horrid. (Text ROCK to 84858 to donate £3).

I'm afraid Nastasja didn't think much of it though. She fell asleep. Contented. Alright for some.

Milk

Even if you can't quite keep up with the dance contest plot line, or take away some points for creative that's 10 miles from strategically delivering on the product's promise that it's filtered to be pure, you have to love watching this completely mental little story in all its stop motion animation glory. Cuts through normal like a knife.

TV3 "learn to use less"

Dead simple, smart idea: make the backlit outdoor ad for this tv series about energy conservation, conserve energy. It only lights up when someone walks past it.

A brilliant demo that has incredible stopping power. Love it, wish I did it.

 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   USA    April 11, 2007 08:31 (Edited: February 17, 2023 04:19)

Paul Foulkes, ECD Goodby Silverstein & Partners , will be this week's guest judge. Paul will be choosing the "bestad of the week" from last week's featured TV & print /outdoor. (It had to happen at some stage ... Paul has to review some of his own work!)

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

TV:

It was a good week for tv work. There are a lot of big ideas and bold executions here. Focus 12, Ford, Got Milk, HSBC, Microsoft - all the work really pulled me in and made me eager for the payoff. But only the Ask.com spot actually made me do something. I'm not sure it all makes sense to me or if there should be some bridge between the work and the site but the spots did get me to the site. And they did make me want to see where this all goes. I'm guessing the work extends into other media in ways that are just as interesting and compelling.

PRINT:

Wow. How do you vote for yourself without seeming like a jerk? Who's idea was it for me to judge this week anyway? There are some cool ads this week with some interesting thinking, but I'm going to have to vote for the Comcast Welcome to Ch1 print. Relaunching a client's product, Video On Demand, as a fully branded television station with tv spots, station ids, print, interactive and an on-air news team seems like a big idea to me. And I love the illustration. What a jerk.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - INTERACTIVE

INTERACTIVE:

There's no winning for me here. Three entries from Goodby. I'm bound to piss someone off. But I have to go with the Got Milk site. I'd be a lying liar if I said I wasn't jealous. It's mind blowing. I've never seen a site this beautiful. There are some other fun and engaging sites here but nothing touches Gettheglass.com.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:
https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Mar/5775_discovery.jpg

BEST TV
Good and simple is hard to come up with, tough to sell and brave to buy. Brokeback Mountain, Discovery and Roller-coaster should all be applauded then for making it out alive. For me the most refreshing execution though, was Discovery. Surprising, rewarding, educating and fun. I want to watch the channel.

BEST PRINT
The WWF image is clever, but ends there. Lookey-likey fails to provoke me into taking any action. The better Irish Radio station piece reignites the power of radio in my mind and makes me want to tune in.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Mar/5638_Law of Gravity.jpg
Best TV:

Ok.... A squirrel 'ice farting' to put out a forest fire appeals to me on so many levels. As does the execution which was beautifully handled. Unfortunately for them they are in the same week as the 'Law of Gravity' milk campaign. Not only is this unusual and irreverent with a beautiful execution, it ties back into a strong strategy of bone strength. It's one thing to take people on a fantastic journey as long as they end up in the right place. In this case that's a place where the law of gravity isn't that strict. Nice one.

Best print:

Print was tough. Clemenger Wellington always do different and interesting things with outdoor and this is no exception. The Red Cross work and the casino were also great examples of using the media differently. In the end though I went for the Axe ad. It's simple, clever, and new in a category we've all seen great work in before. Definitely raises the bar.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

TV
Deciding TV wasn't as simple as we first thought it would be. Choosing the winner came down to following heart, not head. So although we wanted to choose HP sauce for its strategic insight, Altoids gets our vote. When the punchline was delivered, it was unexpected, subtle and funny in a "We've got to email this to all our friends" sort of way.

Print/Outdoor
We really liked the Ariel outdoor, but we liked the Surfrider foundation press ad more. The message is clear, the art direction is beautiful and for once, the lack of using injured or dead animals to promote a cleaner environment is refreshing.

Best Film
We think that the best film of the week is "Hydrant". It's based on a very simple point of view and thanks to the idea and the direction, the result is an original and spectacular film.

BEST PRINT/AMBIENT
We would like to reward "The coin-operated scientist". This campaign unveils the destination of our money as regards donations and charities. It establishes a direct link between the donor and the foundation, allowing us to see the effects directly. This is a strong campaign because the subject, the media and the idea are all perfectly related.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:
https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Feb/5109_Anorexia.jpg

BEST TV
The film for Anorexia Bulimia Kontakt is my choice for tv idea of the week. It's simple, shocking, compelling and memorable with a razor sharp insight into the troubled minds of those who suffer from anorexia. Does the music become a little too big and melodramatic at the end? Perhaps. But this is a well-executed powerful piece of communication that lives with you well beyond the 30 seconds.

https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/print/2007/Feb/tn_5079_RSPCA Ambient.jpg

BEST PRINT/AMBIENT
The ambient floor poster for RSPCA in Melbourne is a simple visual idea brought to life in a really smart piece of environmental media. It would have made a good print ad or poster which would have been good - but not memorable. Yet this format brings the idea to life in a far more dramatic way. Which creates talk value, attracts media interest and I'm sure makes the RSPCA's probably miniscule budget go a lot further.

... and Best Print/Outdoor is "Hug" by MC Saatchi Melbourne.

I like "Hug" because of the impact it leaves the viewer the moment he sees it, aside from selling a universal truth.
