Approximately 30% of the world’s seismic energy is liberated in its territory owing to the high speed of convergence between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates.These movements cause technology, warning systems and communications to collapse, leaving a large part of the country isolated, with no electricity, television, Internet or telephone network, in some cases for emergency periods that last several days.For this reason, the Oficina Nacional de Emergencia developed: "ONEMI Radio," an emergency radio with photovoltaic cells that functions without conventional electricity or batteries. This facilitates access to information immediately after an emergency, lessening people’s uncertainty, anxiety and distress.
