Suicide Zero: Suicide Zero - The Honest Keys SoMe
The Honest Keys – the world’s first suicide-preventive keyboard
In the United States and the United Kingdom, men account for 80% and 75% of all suicides. Sweden is no exception — 70% of all suicides are men. One major reason is that men are less likely to seek help when dealing with mental health issues. At the same time research shows that the ability to put emotions into words is one of the most effective ways to prevent mental ill-health and, ultimately, suicide. That is why the non-profit organization Suicide Zero has developed The Honest Keys, an autosuggest tool that encourages you to share how you really feel. The aim of the initiative is to encourage people to be more honest about their mental health, and to seek help before it is too late. How it works The Honest Keys functions as an additional keyboard that users download via App Store and activate in their iOS settings – just like an emoji or language keyboard. When the user types in phrases such as “I’m fine,” “It’s all good,” or “Everything’s okay,” the app’s autosuggest feature reacts. It suggests alternatives that open up for more honest responses, such as “I’m actually not doing that well” or “It’s been a bit tough lately.” These suggestions can be selected with a single tap, edited if desired, and sent directly in the conversation. In this way, the app makes it easier to take that first step – to say something honest instead of something rehearsed. Ideally, The Honest Keys can lead to a deeper conversation and maybe even help someone be seen in time.
